about the seminar

The sustainability of adult care at home in Turkey

In Turkey, families provide a significant portion of informal care for adults. The population in Turkey is increasingly ageing and this changing demographic structure means care for older people is changing: informal, unpaid care provided by families is now insufficient.

This seminar will discuss possible challenges and solutions to post-2020 aged care in Turkey, using examples from home care in England. I will discuss how the continuity of care, technological developments and digitalisation can inform the development of a high quality, socially and economically sustainable home care model for older people in Turkey.

Dr Hamza Kurtkapan is an Associate Professor in Sociology at the Nevsehir Hacı Bektas Veli University, Turkey. Dr Kurtkapan received his doctorate from Istanbul University and spent time as a researcher at the University of Western Ontario Sociology department and at Istanbul University. He has been an academic visitor at CIRCLE, supported by a scholarship from The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK), since October 2021. Dr Kurtkapan’s primary research interests lie in the sociology of ageing, intergeneration relations and social care. He is also interested in the social life of older people. These interests stem from his doctorate thesis topic: ‘Aging within urbanisation process and local government administrations: Istanbul case’ in the Sociology Department at the University of Istanbul in 2017.
