An Inquiry into the Professionalisation of Social Care Workers by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Social Care has produced a report which has been published today. Sustainable Care team members Professor Sue Yeandle (Principal Investigator, Sustainable Care programme) and Dr Karla Zimpel-Leal (UKRI Innovation Fellow, Sustainable Care programme) comment:

Great to see new cross-party report on urgent need to address care workers’ low pay, tough working conditions and inadequate training. A shameful situation in an underfunded and fragmented sector. No wonder care worker recruitment and retention is so challenging.

Vital to address these issues to achieve the sustainable care we all need – it’s a key factor in the crisis of care, causing enormous but avoidable misery and harm.

Government must support the many care sector agencies and dedicated care workers calling for urgent reform and long-term investment in a quality care system we can trust.
